Canada is awarding me an old age pension of less than $100 a month, qualifying based on US work and residence.

Tax authorities assured me that as a US citizen I may continue to receive that amount by reason of a treaty between Canada and U. S. when I move out of Canada to live permanently in another country not the U. S.

As a non-resident would I have to file an income tax return in Canada to report that pension income?
Madpol1…have US retirement benefits, too, thank you, Uncle Sam. Thanks for the input, and for the star!

You probably would have to have filed your taxes in Canada. But, despaireth not. You are still entitled to a Social Security pension from the US based on the taxes you filed here.
Contact them at their website to find out how to apply:

If you are still a resident for tax purposes, you’d report it under your regular return. If not, you’d report it on a non-resident return.
Canada has a tax treaty with the US. For specific details on that treaty, and how it applies to this situation, contact the Interantional Tax Services Office at 1-800-267-5177.
