Can a person in the army reserve retire from the army and collect a pension like the full active duty military

My brother in law says he can, but I think hes an idiot (because he is one.) I know the regular army personal gets a pension after like 20 or 30 years (and they deserve it.) But he is in the reserves and thinks he can get the pension also. Can he?

Yes, there are 2 types. Assuming that you are a regular Army reserve and retire after 20 years, you can start collecting at age 60. If you are an AGR soldier, you can start collecting when you have amassed enough points for 20 good years of AD.

Also remember, the non-AGR reservist will draw his retirement pay on a prorated scale, it’s a point system.

    pension

Yes, but I believe he will only collect the pension after he is at 60 years of age…not immediately like the active duty members.

Tell the law dude to look at:

Of course! Or else why bother retiring from the Reserves. All the weekends you drill and do Annual Training add up to active time for retirement.

Looks like you be the fool this time.

Hopefully you did not bet an amount you cannot pay him.

    pension

Yes. For 20 years or more of service in the Reserves. But the reservist must wait until age 62 to draw the pension as opposed to the active duty member who is pension-eligible at time of placement on the retired list.

Yes, but they must wait untill age 60 to start collecting,

And it will not be a 50% pension the active duty get.

It will be more like 15%.
