I’ve read that there are no jobs in the legal profession left, and yet all the lawyers in my town are over 60?

I was having a conversation with the judge that lives down the street from me earlier today. He asked what I would like to do when I grow up, and I said I am sort of interested in the legal profession. We talked about college and law school after that, and he happened to mention that all the lawyers in our town are in their late 50s or older. We live in a town (it’s the county seat) of about 15,000 — the county has about 35,000. People always say that there are no lawyer jobs left, but is that just because law school grads only want to go to big firms or what?

Post Script: In citing the fact that all the lawyers in my town are old, I am assuming that they will all retire soon.

Most law school graduates want Big Law because it’s more exciting and because they need to pay their enormous student loans. Clearly, your town is not attracting younger lawyers. Part of the problem may be that the lawyers in practice there have not been looking to hire associates. Most associate jobs in small towns pay very little (especially in relation to those student loan balances).

Don’t assume that these guys will retire anytime soon. Most lawyers like that have to be carried out feet first. Nonetheless, if a shortage of lawyers occurs, new guys will move in to fill the void. The law schools in this country keep churning them out!!

WARNING: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! This is NOT a good field to invest in right now!!! Reasons: very bad economy, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work thanks to the WWWeb, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools in this country (USA) churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates to be supported by this country (USA), if you graduate you won’t be able to get a job, if you do get a job you’ll find the environment is very political and competitive and those in administration do not have the best interests of their employees in mind.

The World is a very different place than when your lawyer friend first started his career.

Suggestion: Go into the field of healthcare LOTS of jobs there!

    Good luck.
