How can I establish dual state residency while living in one state most of the time?

I live in a state with a high sales tax and expensive smog requirements for my vehicles. I’d like to establish myself in a state with no (or little) smog requirements/sales tax and still work in the state where my job is ’till I retire.

Just get a United States Post Office Box, where you are most of the time and register your vehicle there.

You can play that game but if you’re in an accident your insurance will not cover you.

The only way to do that is to LIVE in that state, and if you worked in your current state you would have to go back to your residence at least every 29 days. If you stay 30 or more days you’re automaticlly made a resident of that state. If you forget to do that and someone sees (most common being the local tax board and/or the state taxing agency deciding to see which is legally your residence) it not only will they change it going forward, but they can back track it and make you pay what you’ve cheated them out of.

You can work in one state and live in another. You can only be a resident of ONE state at a time. The is the state where you live. Attempting to avoid the law by claiming residency somewhere else is a crime in BOTH states.
