Let’s Talk About Retirement

I’m looking at joining the military this fall as an officer in either the Air Force or Army. I will have my bachelor’s in Criminal Justice in a couple weeks, so I will likely be looking at an MOS in policing or security. I was just looking to get a little perspective from some of the current and retired officers on how they liked being an officer. I know there are a number of different jobs and it will vary based on that, but I just wanted to know what it’s really like without the bias of a recruiter or scripted web page. Here’s some guidance of what I’m looking for:

What did you actually do over a typical day’s work during deployment/dwell time?

How is the quality of life?

How were the working hours during your time stateside?

How much time did you actually spend with your soldiers?

Describe your experience at OCS. (If you went).

How did your job change as you moved up from platoon leader?

How much actual combat did you see?

What is your college major?

Describe your experience with your on the job training with the platoon sergeant.

Anything else you can think of, please feel free to include. I know plenty of enlisted guys that gave me their aspects of the military, but no one can give me any insight as to what officers do. Army and Air Force officers are preferred, but Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard officers are also welcome to share their experiences.

My second gripe is who came up with this idea of basing our gdp on consumer spending. With a bebt growing, Social security I will never see yet still have to pay for. Dosent any one in congress see the levy will break and it will ****. Someone please tell me I am wrong.

He asked what I would like to do when I grow up, and I said I am sort of interested in the legal profession. We talked about college and law school after that, and he happened to mention that all the lawyers in our town are in their late 50s or older. We live in a town (it’s the county seat) of about 15,000 — the county has about 35,000. People always say that there are no lawyer jobs left, but is that just because law school grads only want to go to big firms or what?

Post Script: In citing the fact that all the lawyers in my town are old, I am assuming that they will all retire soon.

Where i went to high school, they are letting go of the band director *funding*…but they said earlier that his job was safe because two teachers were retiring. Anyways, his job is no longer safe, and in fact they are letting him go after the end of this year. The choir director is going to be dong band as well. How can she be really qualified? She was there when i was there and she was bad with choir…let along band…She only knows how to play the french horn..how can that help the other insturments?

He likes conversation, but me being quiet, I like to work hard and quietly. He likes to have friendly chats, but I’m so stressed at home that I don’t feel like chatting much. I like temping and like to remain anonymous anyway. He always says I’m doing well. He can sit here from anything from 08.15 in the morning (when I more or less get in) and he’ll sit reading his medical bulletins for about 2-3 hours in a desk in front of me (thank goodness he doesn’t face me!) I find this almost like ‘lingering’ and a little unnerving, when I just want to work. What do you think? I have to do my phone calls (all part of the job) and all my typing when he just sits there reading! Am I fussing for nothing or would you feel the same? It’s only me in the office when he’s not here.

I’m 13 turning 14 at the start of summer. I want to get a part-time summer job since i want to earn some money. My parents can’t afford to get me a cell phone or allowance for highschool so i figured that i’d have to earn it myself. My father is retired and my mother is already stressing out paying for the bills/mortgage. So i want to help pay for small things.

I heard that at 14 it’s possible to get a part time job. But i’m not entirely sure. Can anyone tell me what jobs i can possibly apply for? (Like fast food restaurants, assitance or what?)

And please don’t mention babysitting since there is pretty much no one i can babysit. Is it possible for me to do cashier work or work 8 hours a everyday in the summer? Is 14 too young for all this?
(And by the way, i was born in 1994 if that helps)
