How long do I have to roll over a lump sum pension distribution that I received?

Saturday, March 20th, 2010
cookie asked:

My employer closed our pension plan and I received a lump sum distribution. Since I am over 59 1/2 and had some bills to pay, I opted to receive the money after the 20% fed. tax and 10% state tax was withheld. This was in September. I now think it might have been better to roll it over. Do I still have time to do that or is it too late?

Is it legal for your employer to secretly have all employees pension statements mailed directly to his home?

Friday, March 19th, 2010
kdel asked:

Employees of the company have never received a copy of their pension statement, they go directly to the owners home. Is this legal on his half and on the pension companies half?
his home is not registered as an office of the company, and also, there is no extra charge to have them individually mailed to each employee. And we kept asking for statements and he always says he’ll find out why we have not received any…failing to mention, he receives them!

Can my family lose medical insurance through the government if my husband cashes out his pension?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Holly asked:

My husband lost his job and we’re down to nothing. I know it isn’t a good idea to cash out a pension but we have to feed the kids somehow. We’ve thought about cashing out his pension from his former employer but are worried the kids will lose medical insurance (medicaid) and the only job he has been able to find (his current job) is only part time so no medical insurance is offered. We live in Minnesota.

Why did I have to contribute to the national pension and unemployment schemes in Japan?

Friday, March 12th, 2010
Doodlebug asked:

I was there on a working visa, which meant that if I became unemployed or retired, my visa would be invalid and I would have to leave. I understand paying tax - I did use some public services, walk/drive on well-lit roads etc. However, since I was ineligible to receive unemployment benefit or pension in Japan, why did I have to pay for these from my salary?
Shichido - I know it sounds like dodgy company dealings, but I wwas working for the Ministry of Education (contracted to the local Board of Education, in the Town Office) so I don’t think they were breaking the law.
Joriental - I might not mind so much paying for today’s older generation if I knew I could expect the same when I retire. The truth is, I’m enrolled on a private pension scheme and I expect very little from the British (not Japanese) government once I’m old enough to retire. As for paying for Japanese pensioners - why should I, when I’m not Japanese and the terms under which I was in Japan would not have allowed me to retire and claim a pension there? That’s not wa or social responsibility, it’s exploitation.
